What We Do

Sustainable Twin Ports pursues its mission of accelerating the adoption of sustainable business practices here in the Northland through our Early Adopter Training and through special partnerships and events that engage the public.

Early Adopter Training

Using the internationally recognized Natural Step framework, Early Adopter training guides organizations through the process of developing a customized sustainability action plan that can improve operational efficiency, elevate brand reputation and generate long-term competitive advantages - all while minimizing negative environmental and social impacts.

This program evolved from the Early Adopter Project, our first formal training which was lead by TNS Canada in 2008-2009.  Your trainers and guest speakers will bring you the information, show you the processes, facilitate your strategic planning, and hold you accountable for implementing the action steps you create!  A 4-month commitment will be required and should include a team of up to 5 people who can participate consistently.  This hands-on strategic planning process, with 4-6 organizational teams, will create synergies and connections that will continue long after the training is completed and help foster the growing sustainability movement in the Twin Ports.

Community Education

Dine Sustainably is a weeklong showcase of local restaurants that have made a commitment to pursing sustainable business practices.  These include buying local food, conserving water and energy, keeping food waste and recyclables out of landfills, and helping people meet their basic needs.  We also aim to educate the public about the benefits of sustainability for the health of our local food ecosystem and our community.  Dine Sustainably also doubles as a fundraiser for Sustainable Twin Ports.

2014 marked the second year for this annual event.  Restaurant participants included: Duluth Grill, How Sweet It Is Cakes, Tycoons Alehouse, At Sarah's Table/Chester Creek Cafe, Canal Park Brewing Company, and Fitger's Brewhouse. Sponsors included: Alakef Coffee Roasters, Duluth Coffee Company, Lake Superior Brewing Company, Locally Laid, Upper Lakes Foods, and Vikre Distillery.
